MR Safe What does this mean?

MR Safe – an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments. Using the terminology, “MR Safe” items are non-conducting, non-metallic, and non-magnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. An item may be determined to be MR Safe by providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data.

MR Conditional – an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with specified conditions of use. “Field” conditions that define the MR environment include static magnetic field strength, spatial gradient magnetic field, dB/dt (time rate of change of the magnetic field), radio frequency (RF) fields, and specific absorption rate (SAR). Additional conditions, including specific configurations of the item (e.g., the routing of leads used for a neurostimulation system), may be required.

MR Unsafe – An item that is known to pose hazards in all MRI environments. MR Unsafe items include magnetic items such as a pair of ferromagnetic scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are TotalTrace™ Adult Foam Electrodes safe to use in MRI environments?

TotalTrace™ Adult Foam Electrodes are MR Conditional, meaning they can be safely used in MRI environments up to 3 Tesla under the specified conditions. Their design minimizes RF heating and magnetic interaction, ensuring reliable ECG monitoring during scans without affecting image quality. The low-profile foam and conductive adhesive gel maintain strong skin contact while resisting fluid penetration — ideal for use in MRI Zones III and IV where patient monitoring must remain consistent and safe.

2. What makes TotalTrace™ Foam Electrodes reliable for MRI and hospital-wide monitoring?

These electrodes combine advanced adhesive performance with a closed-cell foam backing that blocks fluids and improves patient comfort. The conductive gel ensures stable ECG signal transmission even in long procedures, while the flexible, low-profile design prevents lifting or edge curl. Because they’re optimized for both MRI and general hospital use, facilities can standardize on one electrode type for consistency, safety, and ease of inventory management.

3. How do TotalTrace™ Adult Foam Electrodes compare to other MRI ECG electrodes?

Unlike some general-purpose ECG electrodes that may cause imaging artifacts or lose adhesion under MRI conditions, TotalTrace™ electrodes are built to maintain signal integrity and adhesion in strong magnetic fields. They’re also latex-free and fluid-resistant, making them suitable for patients with sensitive skin and for use in high-humidity or high-turnover clinical areas. Available in bulk packaging (1,000 per case), they’re an efficient, dependable option for MRI departments and critical care units alike.

4.  How well do TotalTrace™ foam electrodes stay adhered during longer scans or on patients who sweat easily?

TotalTrace™ electrodes hold up well in real-world conditions. The closed-cell foam helps keep moisture out, and the gel maintains good skin contact even during warm, high-humidity scans or longer cardiac sequences. MRI techs like them because they don’t lift at the edges or slide the way generic electrodes often do, which helps maintain consistent ECG signals without stopping the exam to reposition leads.

5. Are these electrodes compatible with standard MRI monitoring systems, and do the quantities fit high-volume workflows?

Yes. These electrodes work with most MRI-approved ECG monitoring systems, making them an easy fit for both inpatient MRI units and outpatient centers. They’re sized at 1.5" x 1.2", which works well on a wide range of adult patients, and the 50-pack / 1000-case packaging fits high-volume workflows without constant reordering. Facilities that run sedation days or cardiac studies often choose them because the foam construction is comfortable for patients and durable enough for back-to-back use.
